LOOK I'M LUCID

I came across Sage Keeler’s work about a year ago and became an instant fan.  She is a multi-media artist and musician living in Santa Barbara, California and recently joined up with the Computers Club Drawing Society where her exquisite geometric drawings have been blowing my mind.  Sage’s sense of humor and super savvy taste in sci-fi + rare Japanese horror films make her Tumblr and YouTube favorites some of the best compilations on the web.  She posted her first interactive animation, Polypond, this week and it’s a sure sign that Sage is headed in some cool new directions.  It should also be noted that Sage has an insanely huge pet bunny.  Seriously, look at this bunny.

Your work seems to be inspired by the aesthetics and themes of early internet culture.  Where’s that interest coming from for you?

I didn’t actually find out about the internet until the tail end of the 90’s when I moved out of the forest into real civilization and found everyone yelling about AOL and Y2K and a/s/l and all that assorted so and so.  Of course back then everyone on the internet wanted to kidnap and rape you so it didn’t play a huge part in my life.  I think more of the interest comes from all the games I used to play on my old Macintosh toaster and Mac OS.  Also comic books.  To tell the truth until recently my ‘creative world’ and my ‘computer world’ were two completely separate things.  I guess after a lifetime of exploring every other medium under the sun the two were finally forced to recognize each other and all of a sudden I’m a computer artist too.

Please write a haiku which explains the way your mind works.

Do you mind if it’s a limerick instead?  No?  Ok!

My brain, to be plain, is a gold mine
Full of labrynths and dirt and shimmery shine
With the occasional explosion
Or catastrophic erosion
Which leave me smothered inside of my mind (for a time)

Please draw a picture of your favorite place.

What is something you’ve always wanted to do but have not yet done?

Experience ZERO-G

Which artists have influenced you the most, or which projects?

Lately I have really been going insane over Uno Moralez’ work.  His style, humor and subjects really speak to me on every level.  It’s a perfect mix of early Macintosh / graphic novel aesthetics, both of which hold incredible real estate in my heart.  Seeing Uno’s work for the first time was like watching someone turn my brain inside out – it was as though he somehow tapped into my ADD daydream stream, took some snapshots and threw them up on a website.  I love it when that happens.  I wish I could do the same with his mind.  He is pure genius.

YouTube vs. Vimeo and why?

Vimeo is nice if you care about quality, which I don’t.  Personally, I prefer YouTube.  I think it connects you and your work to a much broader and stranger network of video/audio weirdness and to me that is prime.  I love exploring other people’s weird worlds and I feel like that is more accessible on YouTube.

How many musical instruments do you own, and which ones do you play?

Yikes, I don’t think I could count them – there’s a whole collection in this house.  Over twenty I’m guessing.  Mostly I play the drums but also piano, synth, theremin, guitar, autoharp, and Jew’s Harp (if that counts?).  I also played the saxophone for a while (not sure why I stopped) and I am trying to teach myself flute and violin.  And banjo.  That’s enough.

What was the performance you did at the Impropriety Show?  The trailer you made for it and the documentation of you in that suit look amazing!

Impropriety Show was an all performance art show curated by the lovely Mya Stark and Graham Kolbeins of Mastodon Mesa.  There were about seven or so different artists/groups doing their thing at the same time for almost four straight hours in one space.

Our group was affectionately called “Bitch Swamp”.  It consisted of Sara Ludy and Marty Sataman as magic Moog and space bass-wielding swamp monsters, and Kate Stewart and myself as slimy, faceless fetish mermaids crooning to the audience through a loopy microphone bouquet and noodling out the occasional Theremin solo.  The Lycra suits we wore had absolutely no face holes so they didn’t allow much in the way of breathing or seeing much of anything other than what it must be like to be a cave salamander with no hind legs.  All we could do was listen to our own creepiness, Luke McGowan’s super distorted neurobiology lecture and the general nightmarish cacophony of all the other performers.  It was a beautiful night I hope can be repeated sometime.

What is an odd fact about you or an unusual talent you possess?

I can talk in two distinct tones while whistling simultaneously.  It’s kind of like someone Tuvan throat singing on a space ship.
